A Tour of Tenacious

Tenacious is a Hallberg Rassy 53 hull #40, built 1999 in Sweden and a Frers design. She is 53' on deck, 15' beam, 8' draft and 50,000 lbs displacement. We are her third owner, she has been lightly cruised and carries much of her original equipment which is a positive and a negative as several systems are in need of updating do to age, but more on that later.

Her layout is a 3 cabin, 2 head, linear galley with Nav station to starboard. Sloop rigged with a removable inner forestay. Main and Genoa on hydraulic furling with 8 winches 3 of which are electric for sail control. Volvo 145hp main engine, 8kw Westerbeke generator, solar panels, wind generator, water maker, 270 gallons of water and 280 gallons of fuel.

We have had a bunch of refit work that we started in Annapolis and continue to work on as we cruise. Often one would take 2-3 years to outfit their boat before heading out cruising, we opted for 2 months. The biggest issue was that all the rigging was original, we had that replaced with the hydraulics serviced. We have been working on the teak decks, replacing bungs, trimming caulking and applying sealer. We replaced all of the large overhead hatches. With our main sail tearing, that has moved up the list and we are seeing some aging out of gear/hoses, seals and some electronics. Our plan is to keep working through the refit work through the winter in the Bahamas, making a complete list of "big" items to address once we come back to the U.S. this summer. Current projects include removing some old cetol and sewing new canvas.
